Description
The configure script obviously needs bash, but the shebang line says "#!/bin/sh" instead of "#!/bin/bash"

Nonsense, you have a broken shell, probably Solaris.
To be more specific: I don't use bash, but ash as /bin/sh, our configure is most definitely not a bash script.
