I have no idea if the vob sub file is broken or if MPlayer is broken.

Haven't actually tested with those files, but I think you need to use -vobsub with VOB subtitles, not -sub, have you tried?

Works fine here while playing with -vobsub test despite the "VobSub: Can't open IFO file" message.
