Description
I have a DVD called "Joint Security Area" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0260991/).
This DVD has got (both according to the box and to mplayer -v) Norwegian,
Finish, Swedish, Danish and English subtitles:
[open] subtitle ( sid ): 0 language: da
[open] subtitle ( sid ): 1 language: en
[open] subtitle ( sid ): 2 language: fi
[open] subtitle ( sid ): 3 language: no
[open] subtitle ( sid ): 4 language: sv
[open] number of subtitles on disk: 5
However, during playback I do not get the subtitles that I expect, but instead
subtitles in another language or even nothing at all, as follows:
da -> nothing!
en -> Danish
fi -> Danish
no -> English
sv -> English
The manner in which I try to specify subtitles (-sid, -slang or "n" during
playback) does not affect the result.
Additionally, when viewing the English subtitles it is obvious that certain
parts of the dialogue that are missing.
Finally, I note that Totem (the version currently in Debian unstable, with the
xine backend) does not suffer from any of these problems. (However, it is not
nearly as good as mplayer in any other aspect, so that doesn't help me much.)

I used the right-arrow key to seek forward a bit until I saw some subtitles and
then I quit.

I have put a tarball at
home.tiscali.no/~sstr/jsa.tar.bz2
which contains all the files that are produced by running the command
mencoder -sid X -ovc frameno -oac copy -o /dev/null -vobsubout X dvd://1
with X ranging from 0 through 4.
I also chopped the stream produced by the -dumpstream option down to 5MB, but
unfortunately that only includes the first 18 seconds of the film, and thus no
subtitles. If you feel that a similar-sized portion from the middle of the film
would be useful (and can tell me how to go about making one!) then please feel
free to let me know.

I'm having the same problem here. Please tell me what you would need to have for
debugging. The DVD in question is the brazilian edition on "Being There"; it
has, according to mplayer -v, subtitles in French, English, Portuguese and
Spanish, but only the French and English subtitles show up. Tried on a Windows
computer, on a DVD player, the Spanish subtitles work just fine. :(

This might sound like a silly thing to try, but does adding "-nosound" to the
command line appear to change the behaivor of the mis-displaying subtitles? Of
course it'll have no sound and play too fast, but does anything in regards to
the subtitles seem to change when you try adding that "-nosound" option?

The original bugreport sounds like a problem that should be fixed in current
versions (problem was both widescreen and 4:3 subtitle variants or so that
MPlayer would count a separate ones). Reopen if you still have problems.
